November 2014 - The Mat Drive for The LA Catholic Worker Soup Kitchen + Clinic Was a SUCCESS!

Madison Canary, one of our wonderful instructors, coordinated a yoga mat drive for the homeless in LA. Along with a few other studios in the area, we set up large bins at our Anaheim & Orange locations to collect new and used mats from our generous community. Madison ended up collecting and donating 100+ mats to the LA Catholic Worker soup kitchen and free clinic, who have been offering free yoga classes to people living on Skid Row. Madison shared a few words about the experience:

"When my freind told me that the only thing between the people living on Skid Row and the gift of yoga was mats, I knew I had to do something. I never dreamed the yoga community would rise to the occasion so generously! We were able to donate over 100 mats to the soup kitchen! So many that they are not only being used for classes but are being handed out for people to sleep on at night; we have put a warm layer between them and the cold street. Thank you so very much for your contribution and support! It was humbling and awe-inspiring to see the outpour of donations and support. We have shown that yoga is so much more than the physical postures; it is service, community and love! Thank you for living your yoga!"

Thank you to everyone who gave what they could to support this worthy cause. Thank you to Madison for coordinating. You all demonstrate the power of a great community to do good!

August 2014 - A Yoga Mat Drive for the Homeless!

Time to round up all those old and new mats and put them to good use! One of our wonderful instructors, Madison, has coordinated a donation drive to collect new and used yoga mats at both of our studio locations for the LA Catholic Worker soup kitchen/free clinic in Los Angeles. The LA Catholic Worker organization have been offering free yoga classes to people living on Skid Row, and have a yoga teacher who has started coming in and offering them free yoga classes but they have no mats! Once they have collected enough mats for the class, they will start being given out for people to sleep on since many of them sleep on the side walk.

We will have collection boxes set up at both studios for you to drop off the mats at your leisure.

For more information on the organization, check out their website: http://lacatholicworker.org/

Let's help bring yoga to those who need it most!!

Thanksgiving and Black Friday Donation Classes for the Philippines

As we all know, on November 7th, The Republic of the Philippines was hit by the super typhoon Haiyan. Although our media is fickle and the attention is slowly dwindling, millions of people are still displaced - without shelter, food, or water – and they need our help.

Join us on Thanksgiving or Black Friday morning, as we come together a commUNITY, and connect with our deeper-selves, each other, and our brothers and sisters overseas. These will be donation classes taught by the wonderful Ryan Cox, and all proceeds will go towards relief efforts in the Philippines.

Please know that any donation will do, from $1 to 1,000,000. Energy is a form of exchange too, and your presence and positive energy matter just as much as any donation. This is about RISING up for another, near or far, and saying, we are ONE, we are connected, and we are here for one another!

We understand that you might be on food duty, and maybe can’t make the classes – if you would still like to donate, please visit www.secure.oxfamamerica.org. The Mendez Family Memorial Fundraiser

As many of you already know, The Yoga Mat's main priority is to walk beside you on your journey. This studio is founded on the idea of fostering a strong and authentic community. We ask that you please stand with us today, as we support one of our dedicated yogis, Ryan Cox and Jamie Pinedo, in the loss of loved ones. Please continue to read to find out how you can help during this difficult time.

On the evening of October 12, 2013, the Mendez family were involved in a head on car collision in the Jurupa Valley area. Grandmother, Maria,62, mother, Elizabeth,33, and daughter Elizabeth (Lizzy), 8, lost their lives in the accident while the father, Luis, grandfather, Jose, and daughter, Viviana sustained major injuries, but are in stable condition.

The two girls attended Cresson Elementary in Norwalk where news of little Elizabeth's death deeply saddened the students and staff. As you can imagine, the expenses from a sudden tragedy of this kind can be costly. Medical bills, funeral arrangements and loss of income are now on the minds of the survivors while they learn to cope without their loved ones. A donation made to the Mendez Family Memorial Fund will help pay for these expenditures as well as help get the family back on their feet during these difficult times.

Please pass this memorial fund to your friends, family and feel free to share on your social media sites to help spread the word. Every little bit can definitely make a difference.

We send the Mendez our positive thoughts and prayers - The Yoga Mat Team

As a leading 501(c)(3) non-profit cancer research organization, the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) has
supported cutting-edge research for nearly four decades to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. It has contributed over $309 million to support discovery-oriented cancer research and cancer prevention programs. NFCR is committed to Research for a CURE–cures for all types of cancers.

Cancer Prevention:
Being overweight plays a role in cancers of the breast, colon, and endometrium (the lining of the uterus). Cancers of the prostate and rectum occur more often in obese men, and cancers of the gall bladder, bile passages, and ovaries occur more often in obese women. Exercise is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and ideal weight. Research has shown that an unhealthy lifestyle can increase your risk of developing cancer by as much as 40%.

Aiding Cancer Survivors
Restorative yoga has been used by cancer survivors to overcome sleep problems. Yoga breathing exercises help patients cope with anxiety, nausea, and pain. Pilates’ repeated muscle contractions can help promote lymph node drainage to reduce swelling in the arms caused by lymphedema, a common condition among breast cancer patients.
